In case you’re not familiar with the term, a “Mary Sue” is a character that usually appears in fan-fiction, who is unusually awesome and is really just a writer’s way to insert either themselves or the personification of their lonely heart’s desires into a story. Here’s a better definition at Wikipedia.
People have been doing this forever, and I must admit, I’ve created a few Mary Sues when I was writing garbage in high school.
But what if your Mary Sue somehow came to life? That’s the basic gist of Ruby Sparks, an upcoming indie film about a writer who somehow wills his Mary Sue into existence.
Ruby Sparks stars real-life lovers Paul Dano and Zoe Kazan, who definitely make quite a quirky couple.
I had just seen Zoe Kazan in Revolutionary Road, and she might not be a conventional beauty, but she’s definitely go all sorts of cuteness about her. And if you’ve seen Revolutionary Road, then you’ll probably also remember the wholly unnecessary but much-appreciated flashing of her boobies. Like, you totally didn’t expect them to just pop out and say hello, right?
I wrote an earlier post about indie movies that don’t come to Singapore, but you know what? This one is, and I am ECSTATIC about that.
Mary Sue Ruby Sparks is coming to Singapore on September 20, 2012.
